While the Asus K60I-RBBBR05 still retains the same old corporate black laptop look that is now standard for most laptops it does have a slimmer profile than other 16-inch display laptops. In terms of design it looks clean with straight lines and a nice imprint pattern on the top cover. Solidly built the chassis is quite tough despite the slim profile and offers a full keyboard including a numeric keypad. This is good for number crunchers but a little bad for gamers as the arrow keys have been shifted downwards somewhat as a result.
The keyboard keys are raised island or chiclet style which makes for a comfortable typing experience. While the overall keyboard is comfortable to use with plenty of space, the placement does mean that it takes some time getting used to by touch typists. Thankfully, the small touch-pad doesn’t interfere and makes the most of it by offering multi-tough options as well.
Powered by a 2.2 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 processor the Asus K60I-RBBBR05 does use slightly older technology with the Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics. This doesn’t mean that it’s not powerful enough for the job as it can handle all office applications, Internet browsing, emailing and casual gaming. It is also probably the main reason for the better price tag. However, this means that there’s a little extra to put for the memory and storage enabling the Asus K60I-RBBBR05 with 4GB of DDR2 memory and a 500GB hard disk drive. It also comes with a standard DVD burner so you can watch DVDs and archive disc media.
It isn’t all older tech as the Asus K60I-RBBBR05 runs on Windows 7 Home Premium and wireless-N wi-fi connectivity. The extra space also means that the laptop can pack in four USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port and a memory card reader. At 5.9 pounds it weighs just a bit more than a 15.6 inch laptop and with the slim design it is quite easy on the arms to carry about. While it only uses a six-cell battery it still offers great mobility with a battery life of three hours and 25 minutes.
All in all, the Asus K60I-RBBBR05 is a great larger than average mainstream laptop as it combines the best features and performance of a desktop replacement unit with the portability of a smaller laptop. Combined with its below $500 price tag and you get a large but light laptop perfect for the mainstream user.
